Getting Consistent Proposals

I once had an employer in another lifetime and one of his favorite sayings was, “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS.” Website proposals contain everything from key features of a given service provider to a healthy dose of fertilizer.

One of the toughest challenges for a business is to compare apples to apples with website development proposals and sift through the bull. The terminology, services, pricing and recommendations swing far and wide from developer to developer. So the big question is, “how to reconcile the proposals into meaningful comparisons that a non-technical person can actually read and understand?

The good news is that most website development proposals for small business have some core components that should easily be integrated into a system.

Use the Website Development RFP worksheet on the follow pages. Just fill out the form and give it to each prospective developer. Tell them to attach any additional relevant information. Basically the form will give you everything you need to know. You can use what they attached for your final selection(s).

You will find some developers submitting proposals will balk at this method because it eliminates the pitch and cuts to the chase. It puts you in control. Stick to you guns and don’t allow anyone to offer a proposal beyond this method initially.
